Portland, ME Wedding Photographer :: Alan & Heather :: Linda Barry Photography

Late last fall, I had an engagement session with one of my 2013 couples! We did the session at Wallingfords in Auburn, and we had such a great time 🙂 It was the perfect weather for a photo session, and these two just absolutely rocked it! Keeping this one short and sweet so we can get to the good stuff – the photos!!

These two helped out so much! Not only were they live entertainment, they were also excellent sun blockers!!

Heather & Alan, you two are so beautiful, and I’m so happy you’ve trusted me with your big day! I can’t wait to capture all the special moments on your big day!!

Alyssa and Brad are the first people I’ve ever taken photos of! That was in September of 2011! It’s truly amazing to see how much I’ve grown since then! I’m so happy I am able to be their wedding photographer and that our session worked out as well as it did! There was a blizzard warning in effect for Sunday, and we still went out to the UMaine campus in Orono to get some photos done! The snow was coming down really hard, and I was hoping that we would’ve been able to have the soft fluffy snowfall from the day before. We weren’t that lucky. Just on the short walk from our cars to the area by the library, we decided it WAY too cold to do them outside! The warmth coming from the windows of the library was all the convincing we needed to go and do them inside! It was my first time doing photos in a library, and these two absolutely rocked it! Take a look at this beautiful couple 🙂

Isn’t “marry” such a funny word? When I was taking this photo, I was telling Alyssa & Brad that I thought “marry” is one of those words that just looks incredibly weird after you look at it long enough, haha. Portland ME Wedding Photographer

You can never have too many ring photos!!

Alyssa and Brad, thank you so much for braving the weather for your engagement session! I had such a blast, and I simply cannot wait for your wedding in October! It will be just as beautiful as the two of you.

Tips for your engagement session; Linda Barry Photography; Portland ME Wedding Photographer

First off, if you’re reading this and newly engaged – Congratulations!! It is such an exciting time in your life to be engaged to the person of your dreams! Not to mention, we all enjoy some new fabulous jewelry to show off 😉

My goal with this post is to provide some tips to help you get ready for your upcoming engagement session so that you walk away from your session completely satisfied – and happy!!!

What to wear??

I get asked this question quite a bit, so check out this blog post that will tell you all that you need to know!

Make it true

When we are working together, my number one priority is to capture your love, not someone else’s idea of what love should look like. If you want to use props, that’s great! However, choose props that have special meaning to you and your fiance, so that we can tell your story together, and share it with the world. Make it true to the two of you!! Don’t get caught up in bringing all kinds of cute things you found online, but you don’t really know why you’re using them. This is your time to make it all about your love!!

It’s not always about location

Sure, having an engagement session at a really cool location can make for some super neat photos, but sometimes simple is better. Again, we’re showcasing your love, and not necessarily the cool building that you’re leaning against. To go along with making it true, choose a location that has sentimental value to the both of you! Was it where you had your first date? Where he proposed? Where you go to get away together? Do you both love hiking? Or maybe you love the beach? Try to think of places that will really showcase the two of you and your personalities. If you need help thinking of a location, I am always more than willing to help with that!!

Look up ideas

This may sound like the complete opposite of what I’ve just been saying, but it can be a good idea to look up engagement photos, so that way you can figure out why you like them, so that we can incorporate that into your photos. Do you like the serious photos? What about the ones where one person is whispering sweet nothings into the other’s ear? The sweet kisses? Being swept off your feet? It’s important to have an idea what YOU want to get out of your photos, so that I can help you both get the absolute most possible out of your session!

Why should we have engagement photos done?

Having an engagement session with your wedding photographer is super important, because it helps you all get familiar with each other, and able to know what works and doesn’t work. This way, on one of the most important days of your life, you have no worries that your photographer will capture exactly what you want, and you know you can trust him or her. Having an engagement session is the first step in building that essential trust needed for your big day!!

Jen&Jeff – Engaged!! Linda Barry Photography; Portland ME Wedding Photographer

Last weekend, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing an engagement session of a 2013 bride and groom!! I’ve known Jen for pretty much as long as I can remember. Our parents have been friends for a very long time, and I can recall a ton of visits to their place! We always had a ton of fun, so it’s no surprise that this e-session was any different! Jen and Jeff are so cute together, and Jeff has the most incredible blue eyes.  I didn’t notice how blue they were until halfway through the session, and they literally stopped me dead in my tracks!

We did our session at the Camden Ampitheatre, and got some photos down by the water, and by the Public Library. I’ve photographed at the ampitheatre in the past, but I did not notice the waterfall-type area until this trip! We were all walking down closer to the water and to get to some benches, when we could hear this roar of water. Me and Jen were trying to figure out where it was coming from, and since the sun was blinding us, we could not see water anywhere! As soon as the sun was behind a building, we saw the water, and it was so gorgeous! Turns out, Jeff had seen it the whole time we were walking towards it – he had sunglasses on! I was so excited to take advantage of this water! I absolutely love how this session turned out, and how I was able to use the sun to my advantage!

Take a look!!

It’s not a proper engagement session without some close-up ring shots! I’m very pleased with these, as I rented a 105mm lens and it was my first time using it!! This lens is totally going on my wish list for camera gear 🙂

Jeff picked out such a beautiful ring!! Also, I love those mittens! They’re handmade! Also, Jen was super sweet and let me wear them while I was taking photos, it was so cold!!
